The Super Flash Bros – A History

February 22, 2009 by: Tom

The Super Flash Bros consist of Adam “Dim” Vian (Art) and Tom Vian (Actionscript). They are based in Kent, England. More information about Dim and Tom can be found on their pages.

The Super Flash Bros have been producing Flash movies and games for Newgrounds.com, Flashplayer.com and other Flash sites since the summer of 2002 when they began working together. Dim and Tom had seen a movie on the Newgrounds front page that someone had linked in the forums of their previous home, FantasyGamer.net. This Flash movie inspired Dim and Tom to begin working in Flash and to create movies of their own.

The SFB have a wide variety of themes and content within their Flash. They have produced a bit from everything from video game parody Flash to games about Zebras. Their two most succesful works have been “The Decline of Video Gaming” series and the “Another Day” series. Dim takes pride in the fact that these two series’ couldn’t be more different.

The SFB logo was in fact designed by Tom and is a variation on Macromedia’s Flash logo. The logo is supposed to contain the letters ‘f’ and ‘b’, and if you’re really looking for it, ‘s’. The name “Super Flash Bros” is a play on the popular Nintendo game “Super Smash Bros.” Dim and Tom are bros that do Flash, so it totally works!

The SFB have worked with many artists in the Flash community. The Decline co-author “Double Helix” consists of Dan and JT, two of Dim’s friends. They help write and voice the Decline series, as well as Dim’s part in “The Matrix Has You”. That was the cartoon that gave the SFB their big break. LegendaryFrog had seen Nightmare and sent an email to Tom telling us how impressed he was. He eventually asked Dim to do a piece for the second Matrix parody, “The Matrix Still Has You.” However, Dim made his piece in a couple of weeks and showed it to Legendary Frog, who was impressed with the speed of production, and the quality of the Flash. Eventually “Chateau” ended up in the first Matrix Parody, “The Matrix Has You.”

Other Flash artist friends include John & Richie, Randy Solem, Rubber Ninja, Gerkinman, Paul Ter Voorde, Coolboyman, Metal Maverick, Alex Labbe, Headshot, Jen, AloneintheDark, T0MMY, Ell, Eques_Ardor and Princess Aurora.

Egoraptor deserves a special mention for supporting Dim and Tom over the years and providing a great deal of voice work for their movies and games.
